The author of this blog is David E. Whisnant.  I am a native of Asheville, and currently live in Chapel Hill.  I hold undergraduate and graduate degrees from Georgia Institute of Technology, Duke University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. For thirty-five years I did research, wrote, and taught at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, the University of Maryland Baltimore County, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. That work resulted in four books and scores of articles and reviews on traditional and vernacular culture (especially film and music), the politics of culture, and cultural policy in the American South, the Appalachian region, and Latin America. Over the years I have served as a consultant to many local, state, regional and national public sector cultural projects.  More recently, with my wife Anne Mitchell Whisnant I have done contract research and writing for the National Park Service through our Primary Source History Services. If you want to know more about any of my work, you can find it here.
